Ranthambore National Park
Near the township of Sawai Madhopur, in the state of Rajasthan, Ranthambore
National Park is an outstanding example of Project Tiger's efforts at conservationin the country. The desire to preserve the game in these forests for sport, was responsible for
their conservation, and subsequent rescue by Project Tiger. In 1972, it was estimated, that there were around 1927 tigers in India, of which
Rajasthan had 74, and the number of big cats in Ranthambore Sanctuary was 14.
1972 was also the year that Project Tiger was launched, and this sanctuary was
taken into its wings, along with seven other sanctuaries and national parks. The Park sprawls over an estimated area of 400 sq kms.

Chittaurgarh Fort
Belived to have been constructed by later Maurya rulers in 7th century A.D, this
fort is located on a 180-metre high hill, covering 700 acres. Tablets and
chatries bearing testimony to the acts of sacrifice and gallantry lie between
several monumental gates. The main gates are Padal Pol, Bhairon Pol, Hanuman Pol and Ram Pol. With a
distinct Rajput character, the fort has many architectural attractions. |
